Green/Educational Giving Michener Self Storage in Austin, just completed in 2007, has more than 900 units, so when the economy started to take a dive, owner Mitch Michener saw an opportunity to contribute to the local community. Michener was able to donate 3,000 square feet of storage space to the University of Texas at Austin's "Trash to Treasure" recycling program for an entire year. The units housed ongoing donations of furniture and clothes resold to incoming students at the beginning of the school year. The student-run organization, Campus Environment Center, coordinates campus environmental projects and events, educates UT students about the environment and helps members develop leadership skills. The CED's projects have made significant changes in the environment at UT. Additionally, Michener Self Storage donated a 10'x20' climate-controlled storage unit for a one year period to the Friends of the Austin Planetarium, a not-for-profit organization, providing an intermediary location to store valuable equipment while they finalize plans for land and construction. Their goal is to build a planetarium and science museum in the Austin area.
