A desire to continue learning is the only prerequisite. Over 150 programs including courses in the fine and applied arts, humanities, liberal arts, foreign languages, natural and social sciences are offered from November through April. Recreational courses such as yoga, tai chi, bridge and fishing are also offered as well as day trips to museums throughout Florida, field trips to local arts organizations and on-premises performances and lectures that tourists and seasonal residents can enjoy on a one-time basis. Everything from Jazz combos to drama sketches to chamber music is performed in the series Friday Afternoon Live! The lecture series includes well-known local and national speakers and covers current political issues, psychology, the fine and visual arts, humanities and natural sciences. The Gallery at The Longboat Key Education Center is open to the public and exhibits works by local artists and faculty members on a rotating basis throughout the season. Founded in 1985 by Laura Taubes, The Longboat Key Education Center is located at 5370 Gulf of Mexico Drive, at the Centre Shops of Longboat Key. Access for handicapped persons is provided.
